| By selecting concrete
surfaces from Liquid Stone Design you have chosen an extremely durable
material, which will provide a lifetime of service and enjoyment.
Concrete is a natural
material composed of sand, cement
and aggregates. As with other natural stones, concrete is naturally
porous. To protect the surface, your piece will be sealed with the
highest quality penetrating sealer followed by two coats of wax before
it leaves our workshop.
To ensure the
performance of the material, we offer the
following instructions on maintaining your product.
General care
We do not recommend cutting or placing hot pots directly on the
concrete surface. While the concrete itself is heat resistant, the
sealer and wax are not. To avoid unsightly marks eventually developing
in the surface, we recommend the use of cutting boards and hot plates
as you would on most other worktops. These can be designed next to the
stove or sink as removable boards, or can be cast straight into the
countertop as stainless steel or brass trivets.
Cleaning
To best retain the surface lustre we recommend wiping up spills soon
after they occur and not allowing liquids to pool. Products high in
acidity, such as fruit juice and red wine can etch the surface, while
oils can stain the surface if left in contact for extended periods.
Care should be taken to promptly rinse the surface of these substances.
We recommend non-abrasive cleaners and no cleaners that contain ammonia
or bleach. This is because they break down the surface sealer over
time. Hot soapy water and a soft cloth is the best thing for cleaning
your concrete surface.
Sealing
Your cast concrete surface has been sealed with a food safe penetrating
sealer, which effectively protects your surface by resisting chemicals
and stains. The sealer protects your surface by inhibiting the
absorption of substances in contact with the surface. We recommend that
your product be re-sealed annually.
Waxing
Your surface has been waxed using a natural product, appropriate for
surfaces in contact with food. We recommend applying wax to your
product monthly to maintain lustre and to protect the sealer with an
additional layer, which repels liquids. Apply a small amount of wax
evenly to the surface using a soft cloth. Allow the wax to dry for a
few minutes. Buff by hand or machine to a finished shine.
A periodic light buff every few months, or when water no
longer beads on the surface, with Carnauba Wax will provide an
additional protective layer, add lustre to the stone and help keep your
worktop beautiful for years to come.
Realistically, many owners only wax their worktops once
a year or less, and then some never do at all. Without upkeep and
maintenance, your worktop will patina and stain but this is only
cosmetic and will not affect the durability of your worktop. As long as
you like the aesthetics of your worktop, the worktop itself can be
virtually maintenance-free and provide many years of enjoyment.
